| She had an escort through this strange alley in theory, but in reality the young man who was supposed to be helping her had gone to chase his classmates and one young woman in particular. He'd said something about the money changers, and that he'd be back in three hours and that she should meet him in the leaky cauldron. Gringots, she thought, as she looked about the alley, and down to the list there. She was eleven, for goodness sake, how was she supposed to do these things herself? but she sighed, and moved to take care of the things that had to be done. Money, and clothing and the various school supplies and many other things that she should not have been able to carry on her own but found a way to.
She paused outside of the bookshop, then went digging into her pocket. Out came the oversized pocket watch after some juggling, and being glad that she had brought with her a back pack for the small bits and pieces she'd bought already. She checked the time, then sighed, snapping the watch shut.
"How is it," she muttered in her american accent, so oddly out of place even for how long she'd been trapped in this country. With no family to claim her, and even proof of who she was and where she had come from, she had been living in what had to be the nosiest orphanage that they could place her in. "How is it, that I can take no more than an hour to find the items on a list in a place I am wholly unfamiliar with and this young man could not be bothered to help, get me back to my caretakers in proper timing, then go see about chasing skirts? If I weren't in England, I would wonder where I was that the people here have no sense of obligation sometimes."

| Aiden meandered the streets with his governess, Victoria. His mother was in a meeting with the new staff, and had asked Victoria to stay on, and assist Aiden with his shopping.
As they were finishing up, he eyed a pretty, dark-haired girl muttering to herself. He liked her almost at once.
"Excuse me, Miss," he said, giving a slight bow, "are you lost? Perhaps I could help you?"
He looked to be no older than the girl before him, but he had an old soul. His eyes were a striking blue, and his dark hair fell quite well. He wore proper wizard's robes, and carried himself with the air of the English nobility of old.

| Well, one MIGHT call sparrow pretty, if they liked to look at folks that are rather badly scarred. But, that aside, she looked to the young man, blinking. "Ah. Hello. I'm... well, I don't think I'm lost. My escort has lost himself with his classmates on purpose. ...Though if I add any more stuff to this pile I think I might end up lost in it." | |

| Aiden almost immediately moved in closer.
"Here--may I take some of those for you?" he asked.
"I'm Aiden...Snape," he said, half-whispering his last name. He did not exactly flaunt his parentage, and his mother had always told him to do no such thing. One had to get by on one's own merits.
He continued to hold out his hand for the parcels.
"Young Master Aiden," said Victoria, "I do not think your--"
"Please, Victoria," he said calmly, "my mother would want me to help her."
"What's your name?" he asked her, trying a gentle smile.

| Sparrow listened to the woman with him try to prevent him from taking things. Ah, perhaps a condition of some kind? Well, he seemed insistant...
"Please, It's a little awkward..." She replied, handing off something that was lighter to him, so she could at least rearrange herself. Meanwhile, she seemed to give no visible reaction to his last name. After all, she was new to this place, and she wasn't quite sure why he was whispering.
"Ah. I'm Sparrow Harrison," she replied. "It's nice to meet you, Mister Aiden. Thank you for helping me with these things."

| "Just Aiden, please," he said, smiling as he took the packages from her.
"That's Victoria, my governess," he said, "she is taking me school shopping today, since my mother is busy. She is in a meeting."
He was a little reluctant to speak of his mother, and her position. However, he liked this girl, and wanted to get to know her better.
"So--Sparrow, right? May I call you Sparrow? Are you busy? I'm done with my shopping too. Perhaps we could step into the Leaky Cauldron? I'll get us a couple butterbeers."

| "It's a pleasure, Miss Victoria. Of course you may, so long as it doesn't devolve into calling me 'Little Bird'," She replied with a nod. She looked in the direction of the pub, then nodded a bit. "I think I'd like that. The useless piece of skin who is supposed to be helping me went off to chase some skirts, and to no doubt tell them about the maimed horror he has to escort."
This last bit she seems to say in good humor, but it's a little hard to tell. It was always good to be able to make fun of one's self, or at least that's what her father had said.
"But he had asked me to meet him there in three hours, and I have two hours to wait for him, if he doesn't forget about me. Which he might, honestly."

| The fact that Sparrow's supposed escort had essentially abandoned her and left her to herself displeased Aiden more than he cared to admit. He had every intention of speaking to his mother about the wayward young man, and seeing to it he got some kind of punishment for leaving her alone.
"Don't worry," he said, "I've no intention of calling you, "Little Bird.""
Victoria came in and accepted some of the packages from the children, and shrank them into a manageable bundle with her wand.
Aiden offered Sparrow his arm, like a gentleman, to escort her into the Leaky Cauldron.
"Are you hungry?" he asked, "Victoria and I were absorbed in shopping...so we didn't have lunch yet. Are you looking forward to Hogwarts?"

| "A little hungry, yes. I haven't eaten since before I left the home this morning."
Sparrow blinked, looking at Aiden's arm as Victora took her things and shrunk them down. She of course thanked the woman, with a slight bit of a bow. This was odd for a girl who had grown to expect every child her age would act exactly like that--a child and a rude one at that. But she supposed this made up for most of them, and she wasn't about to discourage the behavor. She took his arm, and let him lead the way. She was sure that if she let him, he might carry on the conversation himself with little imput from her, if any at all.
"I am," she replied, of course walking along with. "It's the first bright spot I've had to look forward to in a long time, really. I will admit that I have little to no idea what's going on here. Well, the logical things like getting school supplies and such were straight forward."

| "The wizarding world is a world within a world, if you want to look at it that way," explained Aiden as he walked with Sparrow into the Leaky Cauldron, "it can be confusing, to say the least, if you don't know what you're doing, or where you're going.
Within a few minutes, Victoria had brought Aiden and Sparrow a pair of butterbeers to share, while she herself drifted over to chat with a friend she noticed. She did, however, keep an eye on her charge, his new friend, and their packages.
"You're not from here--are you?" he asked her. His tone wasn't accusatory, rather matter-of-fact, "I can tell by your accent. American?"

| "I'm American, yes," she replies. "Not that I have the paperwork to prove it any more. So, now I'm here. I'd be Jane Doe if I didn't have the sense to tell them my name."
She tries the butter beer gingerly, looks at the bottle, then has some more. She's usually not much for sweets but this is nice for the hot day. "I'm sure that these things will get less confusing as time goes on and I read some of this stuff that I had to pick up for classes."

| "It won't be hard to find your feet," said Aiden, "you seem smart enough. I think you'll get on fine. We're not all barmy like that jerk who left you."
Aiden's fist clenched around his butterbeer for a long moment, his eyes growing hard, before he relaxed a little.
"I'll be sure he gets detention for the rest of his miserable education," muttered Aiden, looking up as a plate of sandwiches and chips (British, meaning fries) joined their butterbeer at the table. He offered the plates to Sparrow first, allowing her to have first pickings.
"You said something about a home?" he asked "You live in some kind of home for children?"

| Sparrow noted his tensing, then relaxing. She said, "He will get paid back three times for the ill he does me, which admittedly isn't so bad. He doesn't need eternal detention for that. Maybe a good sound whipping on the bottom, but not eternal detention."
She tilted her head to the side a bit, and picked a sandwich up to start on, quietly for the moment. "Yes, a home. No one came to claim me when we failed to return home, so something had to be done with me. Unfortunately, I think they chose the nosiest place they could stick me into."

| Aiden listened to Sparrow's explanation of her situation as he took a sandwich and chips for himself. He took another drink of his butterbeer, chewing thoughtfully before responding.
"I am sorry to hear that," he said with sincerity, "but I am glad you will be going to Hogwarts. Both my parents did, too."
Aiden shrugged easily.
"I know a little about how you feel," he said, speaking quietly and with a little longing, "I don't feel like I know my mother at all, sometimes. It can get lonely...with just Victoria."
He sighed a little, before trying a smile.
"That's not good...too much noise...I wouldn't be able to stand it."

| "I'm sorry to hear that," she replied. "I suppose that your mother is busy all of the time, then?" She then nodded, fiddling with her fries a bit. "Yes, home was quiet. I understand that schools and other public places should be noisy, but home? Not so much so, I think. Though I have to admit I've never been to a boarding school, So I don't know how that will turn out. | |

| Aiden gave an easy shrug.
"Yes. She is. But she makes as much time for me as she can. I know she loves me...I love her, too. It's not easy though."
He considered Sparrow's statement for a moment or two before speaking.
"I suppose that'll depend on what House you're Sorted into when you get to Hogwarts," he said, "but--I don't imagine you'll be in a noisy House. Only Gryffindors tend to be really noisy...like their namesakes, really..."
Aiden couldn't suppress a little smile at that. At least, this is what his mother always told him.

| "That's good to hear. Maybe it'll get easier soon?" She shrugged a bit, a little at a loss as to what to say as she'd never had the problem of being distant from her father. But then the subject changed.
"House?" She tilts her head to the side. "I'm afraid that's another thing I'm ignorant of--I suppose those are divisions within the schools?"

| Aiden nodded.
"The House system helps," he said, "but there are some people who hate it and want it done away with. Each new First-Year puts on the Sorting Hat. It sees into your mind, and what you value the most, then Sorts you into a House. Some people think it does more harm than good, but no one wants it done away with."
He paused a moment, stuffing a chip into his mouth.
"Least of all my mother," he slipped.

| "Well, I could se why they would do away with it. Causing unnecessary tension and division amongst the student body. However, I think that can also be a good thing too, if used in the right way and not just for the sake of competion." She tapped her lips witha fry, then asked, "But you mentioned your mother doesn't want it to go away?" | |

| "No," said Aiden, "I don't really care. But I think my mother is set in her ways. She doesn't want the House system done away with. It was what she grew up with...I guess that means something to old people."
Aiden chewed on his sandwich, drank his butterbeer, and considered his words again.
"Tell me then, Sparrow--I want to know about you. Anything you'd like to tell me."

| "Tradition does have its place, yes," she replies.
She paused when he asked her about herself, and something of a slight frown passed her lips as she thought about it, and what to actually mention in response to the query. There were many things she could say, most of them being none of his business since she'd just met him, but at the same time there were very few things that she could say that weren't.
"Well... I do admit that I haven't much enjoyed my stay in your country. I think you're the first polite person our age that I've met here. But that's probably true everywhere." She winced internally. Great one to start out with.

| Aiden frowned a little himself.
"I'm sorry," he said, "I didn't mean to upset you..."
After a moment, he went on.
"But--I am glad you like it here. Perhaps, we might begin a game?" he asked hopefully, "It's called, "Like, or Don't like. I'll name two things...you tell me whether or not you like them. I'll do the same."

| Sparrow shook her head. "No, it's okay. You didn't upset me. You aren't, after all, the reason I'm here and you're very nice." she nods a bit, then said, "Alright, that sounds fair. Do you want to start, or should I?" | |

| "I'll begin," said Aiden with a smile.
He thought for a few moments before he had chosen the thing he wished to ask Sparrow.
"Chocolate. Like, or Don't Like?" he asked with a smirk. He took another drink of his butterbeer, eyes glittering with anticipating of Sparrow's answer.
A feeling that he had never known before was bubbling up inside the young boy. A feeling of camaraderie. A sense of...peace. He liked Sparrow...really liked her. In his sheltered existence, he had little if any companionship his own age. Until now.
He was sure that Sparrow would be a good ally.

| "Hmm." She nibbled on her sandwich a bit. "I like chocolate, yes," she replies with a nod. "But only every once in a while. I don't have much of a sweet tooth and never have. I used to give Alice most of my candy in school." She paused a moment, almost unreadable, but then looked back to him. "And you? Do you like chocolate? I suppose that I also have to ask you what you like as well. ...Cats?" | |
